Growing Guides

Download our one-page Growing Guides for 13 of our most reliable dry legumes and grains: dry beans, garbanzos, soup peas, soybeans, amaranth, hulless barley, buckwheat, corn, flax, millet, hulless oats, quinoa, and wheat.

For each crop we give details on planting, maintenance, harvest, threshing, storage, cooking tips, yields, and recommended varieties (but please keep in mind that we have discovered many more excellent varieties since we wrote these guides in 2013). Advice is tailored for our Pacific Northwest, maritime climate, and for low-tech labor. Anybody with access to a patch of dirt and an enthusiasm for growing food will be able to grow their own staple foods garden following the advice in this guides.
