This small red bush bean became available as a variety after a collaborative effort of breeders in Washington and Michigan looking for a smaller red bean more typical of Central American cuisine that could hack it in northern latitudes.Breeders selected for disease resistance and an upright growing habit to keep the plants off the ground in longer wetter growing seasons.
Rojo Chiquito beans are much smaller than most small red beans. These beans have a nice creamy texture, make a beautiful deep red broth, stay firm when cooked, and hold their color much better than the competition.
