Medicago sativa
I adopted this alfalfa from Joseph Lofthouse (Joseph Lofthouse Landrace Seeds) in 2018. According to Joseph, it is the offspring of seed collected growing feral in non-irrigated places in
Cache Valley of Northern Utah. It is phenotypically diverse and was collected with the purpose of getting a locally adapted population before GMO alfalfa became widely established in his area.
After growing it over two summers and watching how well it established and overwintered here in Northwest Washington state on only moderately well-drained soil, I have decided I absolutely love it. It's a fantastic cover crop (dense, nitrogen-fixing legume), has beautiful flowers, and can be harvested multiple times for a nutritive and medicinal tea while still producing seed.
I admit I haven't tried any other alfalfa varieties to compare. This variety grows tall and lanky, ending up in what can be a bit of a tangled mass - but does well making a solid mass, which is what I want from a low-maintenance cover crop.
